Yesterday we had an afternoon trip (with a guide… it is not recommended to go without a guide or a local)  to two favelas in Rio.  One of them was Rocinha which is the largest one here. A favela is a shanty town right in the middle of the city. Up until very recently, visiting a favela would not have been a good idea or very safe as many of them were ruled by drug lords. It has greatly changed and now you see police chatting with the locals.
